Golf in Farmington, New Mexico

Championship courses, desert disc golf, and 300+ days of sunshine a year

Farmington, New Mexico is one of the most underrated golf destinations in the American Southwest. Situated at 5,395 feet elevation in the high desert of San Juan County, the city offers four distinct golf experiences — from a nationally ranked 18-hole championship course to family-friendly par-3 play and rugged desert disc golf — all under more than 300 days of sunshine per year. Sundowner Mobile Home & RV Park, located at 219 Airport Dr in Farmington, puts every course within a 10-minute drive, making it the ideal base camp for a golf getaway that costs a fraction of Scottsdale or Albuquerque.

Why Farmington for a Golf Trip?

Most golfers drive right past the Four Corners region on their way to Phoenix or Colorado. That is a mistake. Farmington delivers the same high-desert scenery — sandstone arroyos, juniper-studded mesas, and panoramic views of the La Plata Mountains — at green fees that rarely top $40 for 18 holes. The elevation keeps the air dry and the ball flying long, and the arid climate means rain-outs are almost unheard of.

The crown jewel is Pinon Hills Golf Course, which has appeared on Golfweek's "Best Courses You Can Play" list and has been praised by Golf Digest as one of America's best municipal courses. But Farmington also caters to families with Civitan Municipal Golf Course, a beginner-friendly 9-hole par-3 where you can play 18 holes for about $10. And the growing disc golf scene adds two free 27-hole courses that attract players from across the region.

Farmington's Four Golf Courses at a Glance

Pinon Hills Golf Course

18 holes | Par 72 | Championship

The flagship. Designed by Ken Dye and opened in 1989, Pinon Hills stretches over 7,200 yards through high-desert terrain carved by natural arroyos. Repeatedly ranked among America's best municipal courses by Golfweek and Golf Digest, it offers a links-style challenge with dramatic elevation changes, firm fairways, and views of Farmington's sandstone bluffs. Green fees are remarkably affordable for a course of this caliber.

Civitan is Farmington's most accessible golf experience — a walkable 9-hole par-3 course that doubles as a footgolf and disc golf venue. No tee times needed, no carts required, and green fees hover around $10 for a full 18-hole loop. It is the perfect place to introduce kids to the game or squeeze in a quick round after work.

Lions Wilderness Disc Golf Course

27 holes | Desert terrain | Free

A destination-level disc golf course carved into the rugged desert landscape of Lions Wilderness Park. The 27-hole layout features dramatic elevation changes, technical wooded lines through juniper and pinon, and expansive views of the badlands. This is not a casual park course — it is a legitimate test of disc golf skill that draws players from across the Southwest.

San Juan College Disc Golf Course

27 holes | Campus layout | Free

Located behind the Health and Human Performance Center on the San Juan College campus, this 27-hole course offers a more open, beginner-friendly layout compared to Lions Wilderness. The flat terrain and well-marked fairways make it ideal for newer players while still offering challenge through wind exposure and longer holes.

Best Time of Year to Golf in Farmington

Farmington's semi-arid climate and high-desert elevation create nearly year-round playing conditions that most golf destinations cannot match. The city averages more than 300 days of sunshine annually, with low humidity and minimal rainfall keeping courses dry and playable.

Spring (March through May) is the prime season. Daytime temperatures climb from the mid-50s in March to the low 80s by late May, the winds are manageable, and the courses are green from spring irrigation. This is when snowbirds migrating north stop in Farmington for a week or two of affordable golf before continuing up to Colorado.

Fall (September through November) rivals spring for quality. The summer heat breaks by mid-September, highs settle into the 65-to-80-degree range, and the cottonwoods along the San Juan River turn gold. Fall also brings lighter crowds and easier tee-time availability at Pinon Hills.

Summer (June through August) brings highs in the 90s, but the low humidity makes it tolerable — especially for early-morning tee times. Most locals play before 9 AM in July and August. The elevation also means temperatures drop 15 to 20 degrees after sunset, so evenings at the RV park are comfortable.

Winter (December through February) is surprisingly playable. Farmington receives only about 10 inches of snow per year, and sunny afternoons in the 40s and 50s are common. Pinon Hills may close for a few days after a snowfall, but Civitan and the disc golf courses stay accessible most of the winter.

Stay and Play: Sundowner Park as Your Golf Base Camp

A golf road trip is only as good as the place you come back to at the end of the day. Sundowner Mobile Home & RV Park offers 34 full-hookup RV sites with 30/50 AMP electric, water, sewer, and free WiFi — everything you need to recharge after 18 holes in the desert sun. The park is located on Airport Drive on Farmington's west side, putting Pinon Hills just 7 minutes away and every other course within 10 minutes.

Unlike hotels, Sundowner's weekly rate of $270 and monthly rate of $575 let you stretch your golf trip without stretching your budget. A full week at Sundowner costs less than two nights at most golf resort hotels, and you get to keep your own bed, kitchen, and gear organized in your RV. The on-site 24-hour gym, hot showers, and laundry facilities mean you can travel light and comfortable.

Many of our guests combine golf with the region's other attractions. Chaco Canyon is a 75-mile day trip, Aztec Ruins is just 15 miles north, and the Bisti Wilderness offers surreal badlands hiking 35 miles south. Play 18 holes in the morning, explore ancient ruins in the afternoon — that is the Farmington golf trip.
