Civitan Municipal Golf Course

Farmington's family-friendly par-3 — golf, footgolf, and disc golf in one spot

Civitan Municipal Golf Course is a 9-hole, par-3 course in Farmington, New Mexico that offers the most affordable and family-friendly golf experience in San Juan County. Green fees are approximately $10 for 18 holes — that is two loops of the 9-hole layout — with no cart rental needed because the course is flat and easily walkable. Civitan also integrates footgolf and disc golf on the same 9 holes, making it a one-stop recreation spot for families with varied interests. Sundowner Mobile Home & RV Park is just 4 miles away and serves as the perfect base for a low-key golf week in Farmington.

The Perfect Place to Learn the Game

Not every golfer wants or needs to tackle an 18-hole championship course. Civitan exists for the rest of us — the parents teaching their kids to swing, the couples looking for a casual afternoon activity, the RV travelers who want to stretch their legs after a long drive without committing to a four-hour round.

Every hole at Civitan is a par-3, which means the longest hole on the course tops out at roughly 150 yards. You will not need a driver. A 7-iron, a pitching wedge, and a putter are all most players bring, and even that might be overkill for the shorter holes. This simplicity is what makes Civitan so welcoming: if you can get the ball airborne, you can play here and have fun.

The course does not require tee time reservations. You show up, pay at the small clubhouse, and head to the first tee. On a typical weekday, you might have the course to yourself. Weekend afternoons draw more families, but even then, the pace is relaxed and the atmosphere is free of the intensity that can make championship courses intimidating for newer players.

Three Sports, One Course

What makes Civitan genuinely unique is that it hosts three different sports on the same 9-hole layout:

  • Traditional Golf: Standard par-3 play with regulation holes and greens. Bring your own clubs or rent a set at the clubhouse. Pull carts are available for those who prefer not to carry.
  • Footgolf: A hybrid of golf and soccer where players kick a regulation soccer ball toward oversized cups set into the ground near each green. The same 9-hole routing applies, but the targets are larger and the rules are simpler. Great for kids who love soccer but have never held a golf club.
  • Disc Golf: Chain baskets are positioned near each hole, allowing disc golf players to use the same course layout. Bring your own discs or pick up a starter set in town.

This three-in-one setup means a family of four can play three different sports on the same course at the same time. Mom and Dad can play a traditional round while the teenagers play footgolf or disc golf alongside them. Everyone finishes together, nobody is bored, and the total cost for the family is less than a single green fee at most courses.

What It Costs

Civitan is one of the best values in New Mexico golf:

  • 9 holes: ~$5
  • 18 holes (two loops): ~$10
  • Club rental: small additional fee
  • Pull cart rental: small additional fee
  • Footgolf and disc golf: same green fee structure

Exact pricing may vary — check with the clubhouse when you arrive. The point is that you can spend an entire afternoon playing golf for what a single bucket of range balls costs elsewhere.

Family Golf Night at Civitan

During the warmer months, Civitan is the ideal spot for a family evening outing. Farmington's summer days are long, with daylight stretching past 8:30 PM in June and July. The desert air cools quickly after sunset, making late-afternoon and early-evening rounds the most comfortable time to play.

Here is what we recommend: head to Civitan around 5 or 6 PM after the heat breaks. Play 9 holes of mixed sports — let the kids choose their game. Finish in about an hour to 90 minutes. Then head to one of Farmington's restaurants on Main Street for dinner before returning to your RV at Sundowner Park. Total cost for the outing: less than $30 for a family of four, not counting dinner.

Getting There from Sundowner Park

Civitan Municipal Golf Course is approximately 4 miles from Sundowner Mobile Home & RV Park, an easy 8-minute drive. The course is located in one of Farmington's established neighborhoods, with ample free parking.

If you are staying at Sundowner for a week or longer, Civitan makes an excellent complement to the more serious round at Pinon Hills Golf Course. Play the championship course one day, recover with a casual par-3 round the next. And if disc golf catches your interest at Civitan, the full-scale courses at Lions Wilderness and San Juan College are waiting for you.
